Nile Perch Fishing in Lake nasser - Egypt

Climate and seasons
The area enjoys a dry desert climate that is neither humid nor oppressive. It can rain once a year but only for few minutes. On the lake, the temperature is a few degrees lower due to the cooling effect of the large body of water.
Winter months, from December till the end of February are more prone to wind, which never lasts more than few hours.
In summertime, the weather is very hot in the middle of the day, especially in August and September. During these 2 months, temperature can reach 45°C (113°F) so come well prepared with plenty of sun Protection
Fishing seasons

We have 2 fishing times on lake Nasser, we start from October till end of February. After we restart from beginning of April till July.

 Fly fishing
It is 9 years now that we are specialized with fly fishing. We are proud to say that we already have a specific technique and equipment for big Nile Perches.
The rod: 9 ft for 11 to 12 sinking line is the best. Take one with a tip action. Bring also a 8 line for smaller perches and Tigers.

The reel: It should contain 200m of 30lbs backing, with a good brake system.
The line: I use 2 types, a 11 very fast sinking (Teeny or Rio 400) and a 8 intermediate for smaller perches and Tigers. Bring spare line in case a big perch brakes it in the rocks.
The flies: Stephanie GIRARDEAU, our specialist, clarified special streamers for Lake Nasser. They have to be big, around 20 cm, with 2 strong single hooks 5/0. Rabbit gives them a good appearance and you think they are alive once you put them in the water. Make the head heavy and the knot must let your fly free, a loop knot will be perfect.
All the big flies for pike can work but they should be strong with very sharp hooks. Many colors work too with a special mention for chartreuse and orange, black.
For tigers, use small streamers for trout or bonefish.
Take a banana bag with you to carry your flies and small equipment when you fish on the shore.

Trolling
You need a 30 to 40lbs equipment with nylon or braid line (it is adapted in this case, it should be 90 lbs ).
Bring 80/100 lbs trace, 80lbs swivels, and the following lures:
  • Depth Raiders sinking and floating (BUTCHERTAILS), Fr, yellow, silver.
  • Super Shad Rap 14 (RAPALA), orange, FT, perch.
  • Magnums 18 (RAPALA), orange, FT.
  • Ernie (MUSKY MANIA TACKLES), FT, orange.
  • Mann's 25+ (not 30+), FT.
  • Sorcerer 15cm (Halco), orange.
Each lure should get strong OWNER or GAMAKATSU triple hooks.

 The fishes
We can count 32 different species, of which some are somewhat surprising, like Moonfish, but we are, above all interested in we Nile Perch and the Tiger-fish.
The perch is undisputedly the queen of the lake.
Despite the only recent development of game fishing in these waters, several specimens of over 100 kg (220 lbs) have already been caught (we have a perch of 108 kg [238 lbs] to our credit). But it seems there are larger fish, since the local fishermen have caught a 232 kg (512 lbs) monster!
Magnificent fish, which resemble a giant black bass, the perch makes use of its cunning and power in order to take advantage of any difficulty.
As for the Tiger-fish, it doesn't reach such Pharaoh-like proportions, but can equally display an out-of-the-water aerial defense. A specimen of only 3 kg (6.5 lb) caught while fly or spinning will not leave you indifferent.
Two species of cat-fish can also be found: the Vundus an the Bagrus; they can weight over 50kg and are usually fished at night with natural live bait.
Finally, the famous Tilapia deserves a mention, an abundant forage fish which when fly-fished (dry or nymph) if great fun.
